Setting Up Othello

Othello is a two-player board game played on a board consisting of 8×8 squares. To start, each player has 32 discs made up of two colors – white and black. Discs are placed in the middle of the board with four discs arranged in a square shape – two white and two black.

The goal of the game is to end up with more discs than your opponent at the end of the game by strategically placing discs around the board in order to capture them.

How To Play

Starting with the player that is using black, players must place one disc on an empty square so that it captures some of their opponent’s pieces. You capture (or as the official term calls it “outflanking”) by having your color surrounding the other on the ends either going vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

Outflanked pieces are then flipped over to match their color, resulting in an increase in their number of pieces on the board. For example, if a black piece captures three white pieces in one move, three more black pieces will appear on the board as those white pieces flip over.

A player can only make one move per turn and they must capture at least one piece during their turn or else they must pass their turn. The game ends when neither player can make any moves.
The winner is determined by which player has more discs at the end of the game.

Conclusion

All in all, playing Othello is an engaging and strategic experience for gamers across all ages! With its easy-to-learn ruleset and endless possibilities for tactical play, there’s no better way to spend an afternoon than challenging your friends or family members to this classic game!
