Hey there, fellow game enthusiasts! Today, I want to share with you one of my favorite board games – Scattergories. If you’re looking for a game that tests your quick thinking, creativity, and knowledge, then look no further. This guide will show you how to play Scattergories, a game that combines the joy of friendly competition with the thrill of racing against time. So, buckle up and get ready to dive into the world of Scattergories!
Objective
First things first, let’s talk about what’s in the box. Scattergories comes with a 20-sided die (each side has a different letter), category cards, and answer pads. The objective of the game? To score the most points by coming up with unique words that fit into specific categories, all starting with the same letter.
Gameplay
Scattergories is played in three exciting rounds.
- First off, every player grabs a folder. Choose and agree on a category list that catches your eye, and clip the card onto the folder so it’s facing you. Make sure everyone’s on the same page by double-checking that everyone is using the same category list number.
- Next one player takes the lead, rolls the letter die, and announces the resulting letter. This letter will be your key for this round of play.
- It’s time to race against the clock! Give the top of the timer a gentle tap to start the countdown. Don’t worry if you need to reset the timer – just press it once to stop, and then again to start. Now, let the fun begin!
- With the timer ticking, all players should start filling in the first column of their answer sheets as quickly as possible. Just remember, answers should match the category and start with the key letter.
- As soon as the timer stops, pens down, everyone! It’s time to stop writing.
- Now comes the best part – scoring the round! In turn, each player reads their answers aloud. Players then mark their answer sheets, circling any acceptable answers that are uniquely theirs. Continue sharing answers until all 12 categories have been marked. Then, tally up 1 point for each of your circled answers. Jot down your score at the top of the column on your answer sheet.
- Now it’s time to start a new round. Keeping the same category list, the die is re-rolled to get a new letter and then the timer starts again. If the die lands on a letter that you have already used then it gets re-rolled again.
Ending the Game
After three thrilling rounds of fun, it’s time for everyone to tally up the scores from their answer sheets. The player with the top score takes the glory!
But what if there is a tie? No worries at all! The players who tied get to go head-to-head in an extra round with a fresh new letter. Whoever scores the highest in this bonus round will be crowned the ultimate winner!
Rules
- Your answer must begin with the selected key letter.
- However remember, “A”, “An” and “The” are not considered for key letters. For instance, if a G is rolled for the category of “movie” you would be able to use “The Grinch”; similarly, for the “book” ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’, “A” would need to be the key letter.
- Strive for originality! You cannot use the same answer more than once in a single round. For example, ‘Jackson’ can’t be used for both ‘A Boy’s Name’ and ‘U.S. Cities’.
- When using a proper name in your answer, you have the liberty to use either the first or last name, provided the chosen key letter is at the beginning of your answer. For instance, if the key letter is ‘W’ and the category is ‘Actors’, you could respond with ‘Will Smith’ or ‘Washington, Denzel’.
- Feel free to think outside the box! Creative answers are encouraged. If the category is ‘SPICES/HERBS’ and the key letter is ‘P’, ‘Posh’ could be a suitable response. However, if another player disputes this, a group vote will determine its acceptability.
Challenged Answers
During the reading of answers, players have the right to question their validity. In such cases, all players (including the one who is challenged) cast a vote on the acceptability of the challenged answer.
In the event of a tie, the vote of the challenged player is disregarded.
